This Listed Open Handicap mile saw an Australian bred 5yo mare in Hinerangi win narrowly after sitting outside the leader on a testing wet Awapuni track. The winners were getting wider and wider the home turn as the meeting progressed on a deteriorating Heavy ground. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were third (four-off the inside and a length from the leader), third (four-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), sixth (four-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), third (six-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), sixth (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), second (six-off the inside and a neck from the leader), co-leader (ten-off the inside) and led (twelve-off the inside and two lengths ahead). Hinerangi on the minimum of 53kg sat second the outer then challenged turning for home and had a narrow lead at the 200m and 100m, which she held to score by half a neck in 1:38.53. It was her fifth win from twenty starts and her first Blacktype gained at her fourth attempt in Stakes class. Red Sierra, also a 5yo mare, ran a game second after racing fourth then third wide all the way and she fought ever so hard the run home. Dolcetto the favourite raced fifth or sixth between runners and poked through fourth turning for home then tried hard under 57kg reaching third with 15m to go and ended up just over a length from the winner. Sergeant Blast settled down last the inner and came through closer in the run home to reach third at the 300m and was there until the closing stages. She's Poppy ran second favourite and raced seventh wide then ran on to reach fifth at the 200m albeit she was beaten four lengths. Overtheriver ran on from last turning for home and got beaten five and a half lengths. Bully Boy weakened after racing third then fourth while Raw Impulse settled well back and never got into the race at any stage. Prosecco led up and was outclassed back in the North Island. This was a weak Listed field and Hinerangi being able to win it confirmed as such as in three Blacktype runs before had finished sixth, thirteenth and seventh. The race was sedately run and the co-leaders turning for home formed a clear cut quinella. Every winner today bar two turned for home first, second or third and the two that straightened up sixth were both close enough to prevail.
