This G3 event at 2000m under WFA had some controversy after they crossed the line with a relegation then a denial for another protest to be considered. The winner Consensus got up in the last stride after having had a good run third throughout and was winning her sixth race from twenty-starts. She has come up super as a 4yo mare and before the G3 success today (her third win in a row) was a Listed winner and three times placed at that blacktype level last season and earlier. Middle distance seems to suit and having tactical dash now much stronger is proving invaluable for this once backrunner. Her consistency is worth mentioning too as she has been top five in seventeen of her twenty outings. The runner up and favourite Vavasour raced outside the pace before applying some heat across the top and despite being headed the run home came back determinedly to go down only a nostril flare. She had cost the fourth finisher Soriano a run through the inside near the 200m mark so was relegated behind that runner. The third finisher then promoted to second was Spoke To Carlo that ran a super race and showed WFA was not an issue nor the 2000m. He over-raced at times but still took the lead at the 300m before being nabbed on the line. His being officially placed ahead of Vavasour saw the connections of the latter request a protest against it as they did come together when fighting out the finish in a ding donger the closing 100m. No protest was deemed allowed to be heard and the Vavasour camp were not happy campers. Soriano would have won if not checked when going for an inside run that was there but closed at the 220m mark and she ended up fourth beaten not very far at all then got promoted rightly into third. She was back on the inner and about to surge when Vavasour closed the door on the fence corridor. There was a gap back to the rest with The Tidy Express an improver next time out. It Has To Be You was not too bad while Miss Selby clockwise is still a query but she has time to cope. Empress Elect led and stopped badly after being outclassed and Candle In The Wind was poor. The winning time of 2:03.26 was nothing flash considering the footing and day was conducive to running decent times in the main. Consensus will be shooting for four-in-a-row when next seen out and may tackle handicap level in the late spring and early summer Cups. Spoke To Carlo is getting a well deserved spell having come from Hong Kong where he was not competitive at all to be a Group horse in New Zealand. Soriano is on the way back and she should clean up at WFA over the Christmas/New Year period as long as she stays in New Zealand as that is her level. Vavasour will be looking for justice next time out and can be a major force in WFA racing over the next few months as the mare is also a pace influence.
