Age: 3yo Sex: F Type: OPEN

This Listed 3yo filly 1400m was contested on a tricky wet track at Ellerslie as usual and did not really if in fact at all advance the pecking order of this age and sex. Dijon Bleu the winner has now won her last three starts in a row at Listed, G3 and Listed level but all have come on heavy or slow ground so it is totally wet track form. The filly is not very big but loves the mud and did pass two important tests today in that she won clockwise and got the 1400m. She was crowded early and settled back but she is a closer so that was not a concern. The visiting Central Districts filly was ninth in the running until improved quickly up a middle path from the 400m and she closed in quickly on the leaders at the 300m to take the lead at the 200m. Then she ran about but held on to score by a neck in 1:27.50, so whether the mile is attainable remains a query but better to try it at this age than next season against the older horses. The time was the second slowest of the day and was about six lengths inferior to the Open Handicap and two lengths below a Ratings 75, so not too bad in an overall comparison. It was her fourth win in seven starts and her sire Burgundy is leaving a lot of wet track winners this season. Kapoor just out of maidens sat fourth the outer and moved into third turning for home before hitting a flat spot and being fifth then got her second wind to reach second at the 100m, She got close to the winner the closing stages in a combination of having a more sustained finish and that the winner had run about and given up some of her lead prior. Campari is laying claim to currently being one of the better maidens racing at the moment with her third placing in as many starts but she reaped a Listed third today so that is invaluable for her breed and broodmare career. She is out of a Zabeel dam so the best is yet to come for sure and over more distance. Contessa Vanessa ran a game close up fourth after reacting badly near the home turn and running wide. She raced sixth but covering that extra ground crucially at the 450m mark mattered as she ended up being beaten less than a length. Hello It’s Me was an eyecatcher after a tardy start to settle down second last and she looks a middle distance filly already. He second dam left Kaapstad Way (9 wins) that incredibly never won a Group race but was placed six times at G1 including a second in a fast run the Caulfield Cup (2400m) behind Diatribe in 2000 and fourth in the Melbourne Cup (3200m) that same turn of the century. Caesour’s Dream was better after leading and is close to some form again while Princess Rihanna can be forgiven after being bumped the worst and run widest neat the home turn when winding up. A decent barrier draw would help Princess Rihanna this season. Style By Design was grinding home fairly and Belle Du Nord was a tad disappointing but she copped being forced deeper near the home turn too and in fact was the second widest runner at the 450m. Improved footing as in not slow or heavy will see the real Belle Du Nord when next seen out. The other duo got beaten seven lengths and over sixty-five lengths, with the last runner home Charli Rose a shocker. Once again this is wet track form so can be dismissed unless those slow or heavy conditions happen again. All, some or none of these could be exposed big time on top of the ground so until they compete with track conditions more realistic then nothing is known or set in pecking order stone. The G1 1000 Guineas (1600m) could be the first dry track meeting of the fillies this season so far. Campari and Hello’ It’s Me look Oaks fillies in the making already. None of these would worry the glamour filly Prom Queen at the moment it seems and she has also won on a dry track this season.
