The winner of this G2 3yo only over 2100m was the second to rank outsider Hezashocka at $75 and it was ridden by an apprentice Masa Hashizume. The maiden 3yo gelding at just his third ever start raced seventh surrounded then ninth still covered up before coming up sixth and wider turning for home. He surged and reached third at the 200m and led at the 100m then held on by a nostril in 2:18.45 for his first win and obviously first try at Blacktype. The time was a fraction faster than the Ratings74 run earlier in the day of 2:18.56 althouth that was too won by an outsider and known wet tracker showing the footing today was very tricky. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were third (three-off the fence and four lengths from the leader), second (three-off the fence and half a length from the leader), led (one-off the fence and two lengths from the leader), fifth (seven-off the fence and seven lengths from the leader), second (two-off the inside and a length from the leader), tenth (ten-off the inside and five lengths from the leader), sixth (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), fifth (twelve-off the inside and three and a half lengths from the leader) and fifth (thirteen-off the inside and length and a half from the leader). Hezashocka clearly enjoyed the Slow9 footing and the 2100m as he is a very late maturing 3yo indeed. Second home and beaten a nostril flare was the favourite in the filly Joy Alone that unleashed hard from well back and wide on settling. She came up fifth and deeper turning for home and kept coming to miss by the barest margin and her G2 placing goes with her prior G3 win over 2000m by a short head. Third home was Milford Sound and he had run Joy Alone so close at his prior run at G3 and today settled well back but ran home very strongly and he was still in fact seventh with 100m to go. He got third on the post and was beaten a nose and three quarters of a length and intriguingly has now attempted Blacktype three times (at G2, G3 and Listed level) in New Zealand and has three placings to show for it. Fourth home at $52 was Lowry that raced outsider the leader and led turning for home before being headed at the 100m and the gelding only lost third on the line. Ever since he has been stepped up over ground his formlines have come good and rain-affected footing just adds to his improvement too. Fifth home was the Australian bred Tony Be that settled down second last and he ran on very gamely after staying closer in the run home. The colt was only beaten just over a length here so the run had plenty of merit and he is clearly relishing the rise up over ground like a few in this. He had run a super fifth at G3 prior to today over 2000m. Sixth home and beaten just a length and a half was Wertheimer that settled well back and then swept up deep across the top and even wider turning for home. The gelding reached fourth at the 200m but fought hard to the line despite being hampered late too. He was ridden by the apprentice Ashvin Goindasamy. Seventh home and beaten over three lengths was the filly Lavita Vishvi that raced fifth the inner then came off turning for home and battled on okay. There was another sizable gap to the eighth finisher in Daqiansweet Junior that raced midfield the inner then came off across the top but never ran on and he was beaten almost six and a half lengths. This gelding ran second favourite and was disappointing overall for new connections. The next runner home Zoltan, that was ridden by the apprentice rider in Tegan Newman, was beaten over eleven lengths after leading up and then being headed turning for home. The field then came home in intervals with the last finisher being the Australian bred Fast Willie that was beaten almost twenty-five lengths. Many of this field did not stay and many didn't cop the very tricky Slow9 footing so it made for a strung out field at the line and the second to outsider of the field prevailed at huge odds. Whether most of these are actually stayers is debatable on their breeding and a quarter of the field were ridden by apprentice riders too. The form however of the second to eighth runners home has been sound enough so the winner Hezashocka will never pay these odds again for sure.
