The G3 over 2100m for 3yo fillies saw a very dominant winner in Sofia Rosa and she cements herself now as the favourite to win the G1 NZ Oaks on March 19 at Trentham. The big field looked to have reasonable depth but reputations were demolished and erased at the line as Sofia Rosa won by over four lengths with something up the sleeve. Sofia Rosa is not very big but she can sustain a long run and importantly handles most types of footing, which was important as the Hastings track today was very ordinary and chopping out badly. The filly was winning her fourth race in eight starts and should have an even better record but for bad luck. She had won at G2 prior to this G3 success and that pinnacle G1 awaits this autumn. The runner up was distant but Strada Cavallo found the line well and her effort actually enhances the winner as this filly was G1 placed at a mile in the Spring behind a since G1 placegetter in Australia. Amazing Lady was a huge third and while distant she is a maiden so that tempers the result overall. She was back and then wide but kept coming so on this effort will not be a maiden for very long. Fanatic ran on okay closer in from back the inside on settling. Tessastock ran an honest race for fifth after sitting outside the leader and was the first one home of the on pacers plus she is still a maiden. She has scope and if she could make the Oaks field would not be disgraced. Alcadesa was okay from the trail but is a wet tracker and so the footing helped her cause and dampened that of others. Sacred Siren was running on and has scope so note her name down for the rest of the season and perhaps may be seen in Australia for the Queensland winter carnival. Speaking of Queensland the filly named that led and was run over in this and is best ridden quieter or with cover it does seem. All In Vogue was warming up late from the back and is on target for the Oaks where a roomy track plays into her hands. Sewreel was disappointing after racing handy and may have trained off or perhaps a racing pattern change is needed. The flops were Goodsav, Hot In High Heels and Black Sav as these run on fillies never yelped at all. Sofia Rosa has these covered by panels and hard to find a filly in New Zealand that could topple her in the G1 NZ Oaks and importantly on any footing. Strada Cavallo was game and being an already G1 placed filly behind Risque (G1 third since in Australian Guineas at Flemington) it shows just how good the winner is. The two running on names worth noting are Sacred Siren and All In Vogue while credit should be given to the pair of Fanatic and Tessastock.
