The 2016 running of this Listed 2200m race was run and won in a record time so it was a real stamina test. Chenille, a 4yo mare, sat back on the outer then swept up deep near the home turn to fourth before surging to the lead at the 150m. She won by a length and a half to clock 2.12.89 and has now won five of her seventeen starts plus gained her first blacktype today. Chenille has come up super this year with and importantly goes for a spell in form and in fact impressively has in her seven-start campaign won three and placed four times. The consistently solid pace set up in front by Saint Emilion would have worked for the 4yo gelding most times but under 58.5kg and giving the winner 5.5kg he was run over easily. Savaria, another 4yo mare, ran home stoutly for third from well back and may be coming back too her best, with it worth noting she like the winner carried 53kg. Jacksstar ran on the final stages for fourth albeit almost three lengths behind the third finisher while Diamantine did ditto for fifth after a fence hugging the trip to the home turn. Silverdale is a backrunner but was ridden far too handy the outer in fourth and therefore never had his normal surge the run home. Maygrove felt his topweight of 60kg and being wide a long way out in the midfield never helped either. Nymph Monte was trapped wide throughout and will sleep well so did okay to only be beaten eighth and a half lengths in such a fast run race. The pleasing aspect for New Zealand future staying races is the first four home were all 4yo gallopers but there have been false dawns like this before and nothing has eventuated. Chenille looks like she could perform in Australia so is a name to note whereas Saint Emillion has the right racing pattern but could be a sitting duck if deep ended. Savaria should go to Queensland now coming back to form but whether that eventuates is up to the connections and trainer. Jacksstar will be set for the Cups Triple Crown locally next season. Maygrove (weight) and Nymph Monte (wide throughout) can be forgiven
