This Listed 1200m saw the same colours successful as the prior race, the Listed Hawke's Bay Cup, albeit for different yards. What did not change was the winner Indecision was well out of her grade and on the minimum and also carried half a kilo overweight, which has become an alarming and very worrying trend in New Zealand blacktype racing. Indecision, a 4yo mare, had only run against as high a grade before today as Ratings 85 (two or more classes inferior to a Listed Open Handicap) and was a three-win galloper that had never won left-handed either. She disputed the pace on the inner and stayed closest in near the home turn to clearly lead at the 400m, so totally ignore the commentary when watching the replay. Her margin of victory at the post was a flattering to the opposition just over two and a quarter lengths and she clocked 1:11.68. It was her fourth win in fourteen starts and her first blacktype success after a fifth at G3 last season when a 3yo filly that also came here at Hastings. Deals In Heels was a super fresh up second after being tardy and second last away, with the also 4yo mare unleashing stoutly from still being sixth with 100m to go. After trying twice before to get blacktype and missing Deals In Heels got a Listed second today and she reveled in the off wet ground. Rikki Tikki Tavi, yet another 4yo mare, has never run in higher grade than Ratings 85 like the winner before today, and at her first blacktype attempt got third after running on from sixth on settling. Akoya, yet another 4yo mare in the field, ran on okay for fourth and frustratingly for connections in her last three outings she has finished fourth each time at G3, Listed and now Listed again. Gift Of Power, a 3yo filly, started favourite and raced outside the winning leader but could not kick on when deliberately steered wider. Salamanca raced third the outer and moved up wide before the home turn and wilted to finish fifth beaten just over three and a half lengths. Ringo ran on okay from last under clear topweight of 60kg while Volks Lightning was a disappointing eighth and may have had enough for this preparation unless she can find better footing next. Mighty Solomon was ordinary fresh up and Barcelo, usually an on pacer, missed away and never got into the race. There was four 4yo mares in this race and they filled the first four sports across the line and they had the weights in their favour too though the winner was carrying half a kilo overweight. Clearly there is form to come out of this race then as all of them will be racing next season.
