The track today dried out a fraction due to wind but was still presented as an off Dead 5 and on this venue moving wide before the home turn is never a negative if some pressure has come prior in the running. The winners and where they turned for home in order( where the straight is 320m maximum) were led, eighth (four lengths maximum from leaders and second widest runner), fourth, fourth, third, fifth, led, led and ninth (four lengths and second widest runner). This G3 1400m under WFA for fillies and mares drew a reasonable line up and the first eleven over the line were covered by less than four lengths. A fresh up visiting Nicoletta set the pace and kept kicking too well despite being there to be run down if anything was good enough. The 5yo mare won by a long neck in 1:24.01, the fastest time of the day but not by much as the other times at this trip were one length (Benchmark 82), two lengths(Benchmark 65) and four lengths (Benchmark 65) inferior. Nicoletta was winning her fourth race in twenty-two starts so is a bit saluting-shy but she was prior to today a G3 winner as a filly and G1 and G2 placed twice each with three of those coming as a mare at WFA. Her wins have come at 1400m, 1500m and a mile but she has been G1 placed at 2000m at WFA versus all comers. Livin' On A Prayer ran home hard for second after racing seventh and being the second widest runner turning for home. Art Deco after settling back on the inner worked off across the top and came through fifth turning in before reaching third at the 200m. Heni after racing outside the winning leader and a head away keeping her honest for much of the race was hampered late and finished fourth. It cost her a G3 placing for sure as she lost third the last 5m and strange that no protest happened as the case was solid but being over a length from the winner counted against her. To show the interference was as bad as it looked the winning rider copped 12 days suspension and a $500 fine but that is cold comfort to anyone that backed Heni either eachway or in a multi to place or in the trifecta. Save The Date from sixth the inner poked through as a chance at the 100m before ending up fifth and was just a neck and a half head from third. Darscape Princess from third on settling looked a chance turning for home but hit a flat spot before boxing on again and was only a length and three-quarters from the winner. Excelleration ran on well late from tenth on settling to be seventh and was less than two lengths from the winner. Ruby Armani battled away okay for eighth and Yearn was going to beat her home but got hampered late. Rayas at $60 a win was tardy but ran home well and is a next upper for sure. Red Sierra ran home well late too after settling back and wide and just needs a senior rider on to start winning again. Piece Of Kate and Slimline never looked likely while Destiny One reared at the start and lost any hope. Rosewood was dreadful in running a very distant last and needs deep and testing wet ground clearly as shown by her wins have all come on heavy footing (8 wins) and her lone slow track win at 1400m came in 1:27.89 (which is almost twenty four lengths below standard on decent footing for a regular maiden showing how wet it was that day in particular). Lots of winners can come out of this race as several are better on top of the ground and there were numerous eyecatchers late. Nicoletta will try to get that G1 win this season and seal her broodmare worth, which is already looking appealing, and her distance range may see that elusive win at 1800m or more possible.
