The G2 1200m for juveniles fillies only saw another tight finish and three of them at the line separated by less than half a length. The local maiden Gold Rush by that star galloper and now sire So You Think showed tenacity in a driving finish to win by a nose, after having sat outside the leader on settling. She won in 1:10.26 and that compares well enough to the colts and geldings held two races prior. It was a gritty win and showed plenty of character much like one of her owners the All Black legend Sir Colin ‘Pinetree’ Meads. Sassy ‘N’ Smart was a good thing beaten after a tardy start and settling back and wide before asked an awful lot of across the top then detonated the deepest out turning for home. The response was explosive and the filly only missed victory by the smallest margin to remain unbeaten. What Choux Want fought hard for a very close up third having sat handy the outer then moving up wide before the home turn to lodge a bid. Astara after using up extra energy to cross over and lead was only run over the final 100m. Luna Rossa was a real eyecatcher the latter stages after being in the rear duo most of the race and she will relish the 1400m G1 in autumn at Awapuni. Rosa Carolina was a sound sixth after being held up at a key moment the run home and has improvement to come. O’Rachael after trailing did not get much clear air ahead halfway up the run home so can be forgiven. Tesia was not too bad from the back and with a better draw can be in the money next time out. I Am Gracie had a horror run wide so will sleep well and can be excused to some extent while Feisty Jane, the stablemate of the winner, lost her place early and never recovered. Sassy ‘N’ Smart should be still unbeaten but that tardy start was costly. Luna Rossa is the one to follow also out of the race for the two G1 juvenile races to come over autumn. Astara has speed and will keep improving while Rosa Carolina, another maiden, has more to come this season.
