This Listed 1200m event for juvenile colts and geldings saw the leader (as five of the nine races did on the day) score and in fact no other winner came from further back then fifth or sixth turning for home. The Australian bred Summer Passage had been second beaten three lengths at his debut by a rival in again today but he would turn around that deficit by almost eight and a half lengths today. The local colt was driven right out under the whip to win by half a length in 1:09.79 to record his first success and at his first blacktype attempt. Summer Monsoon, another Australian bred colt, ran on well for second from fourth the inside with clearly the ace gate helping him markedly. Hanger on debut ran on well for third the inside after being fifth or sixth the inner and he has upside for the rest of the season. Mighty Power the maiden ran on well late but will remain a non-winner (especially at blacktype level) this season it seems as he cannot lift early the run home (change up speed) like many others can. I Got You on debut raced outside the winning leader and weakened the run in for fifth beaten almost four lengths but was not disgraced and should win a race this season at least. Aim Smart had demolished Summer Passage, when both were on debut clockwise, but the colt was dreadful today after sitting fourth the outer and showed nothing the run home. He was found to have an elevated respiration rate post race and subsequently a bit sore so has been turned out next season until the Spring. Beyond Dispute was outclassed but would be a chance in an all maiden juvenile event. The winner Summer Passage has scope and is built to keep progressing and consideration is even being toward a Golden Slipper or Sires Produce attempt in Sydney. The latter is not inconceivable as the opposition drops off numerically and gets weaker for this race but the Slipper would require history to be made regards a New Zealand trained runner having never won it. The weather looks very unsettled or Sydney and it may be a wet carnival too so that needs factoring in as well. He may be better suited to trying to win a G1 at home but then that does not make him worth any more as a stallion, where as an Australian G1 is a surefire money-maker.
