This was a faster run Listed event over 1800m for 3yo fillies than the G3 that followed this for the older horses, with Seven Seas coming with a crunching run out wide from eighth to just get up. Just over half a length covered the first six home such was the very busy nature of this finish. The winners and where they came from were in race order seventh (six-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), seventh (four-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), seventh (on the inside rail and three lengths from the leader), fourth (six-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), second (one-off the inside and a neck away), eighth (eight off the inside and three lengths from the leader), seventh (eight off the inside and two lengths from the leader) and sixth (six-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader). Seven Seas raced back on outer but came with sustained run out deep to get up in the last stride and score by half a head in 1:50.58. It was her second win having scored on the same track in late December and today was her first look at a Blacktype event. Second home and just beaten was Nothing Compares that sat second the outer and led narrowly at the 100m only to be run down on the line. Third home and beaten just half a head and short head was the trailer Heart Of The Ocean that had been worked off turning in and was fourth on straightening up. She was fifth and green at the 150m before knuckling down hard the final 50m. Fourth home and was the Australian bred leader Amal Rose that fought tooth and nail to the wire. Fifth home was the uber-brave Aquila Star that raced wide almost the entire race and was still right there until the last 10m. Sixth home was Desert Mirage that had come through closer in and reached fourth at the 250m and was only swamped the final stages. Bergamot was in the last three turning for home and still eleventh with 100m to travel before running on well for seventh beaten just over two lengths. She would perform the best out of this field in the G1 NZ Oaks when a meritorious fifth having run prior a good fourth at G3 at Ellerslie. A total forgive was Aloft that turned for home ninth then got sandwiched out of a gap the closing stages and was a grabbed hold of eighth at the line beaten just under two and threequarter lengths. In Fashion ran on for a decent ninth closer in after being eleventh near the home turn. Tenth home and a forgive was Tuppence that was wide in the rear trio across the top and the rider gave up the final 50m when the race was all but over. There was less than seven and a half lengths from last to first and many fillies in this had genuine hard luck stories. This was basically the B-grade fillies in a very strong year but you just know that some of them as four-year-old mares will make the necessary step up.
