The G3 3yo feature saw a close finish with a nose between Tavago and Shadows Cast and just half a length back to the leader Zacada. The pace in the race was nothing out of the ordinary and the winning time of 1:36.59 was in fact the slowest mile on the card. Tavago has a good sit handy for most of the race and looked a tad flat when fourth at the 200m and not really gaining but then started to lengthen at the 100m. He got up inside the final 10m to win by a whisker and looks already like middle distance will help his cause more plus cut in the ground looks imperative. Shadows Cast raced handy and after taking the almost length of the straight to get narrowly in front the final 10m got beaten by the bob on the line. He now has a win and three second placings from his four starts plus likes some cut in the ground too. Zacada looked to have stolen the race when kicking clear at the 300m and looked home and hosed at the 100m only to be bombed the final 10m. He looks a Derby type as long he relaxes more in his racing but showed today that if nothing else wants to make the play then he certainly can. Rangipo ran on well after an average start and settling back while Head Spin caught the eye late from second on settling down. The Wolf will sleep well tonight after being deep and working then going up handy wide across the top to the home turn. He was second still at the 300m and had to weaken after such an ask so to finish sixth beaten four and a half lengths was admirable and suggests his will is there and rewards should come later this season. Bella Court ran on late and is a winner in waiting while Alarmist did okay late and she should pick up a win soon in lesser company. Goodsav was a tad disappointing but she did lose her handy position and looking at the result that was crucial in the end. The rest never looked likely with Perfect Harmonee the one forgive as he had some soreness after the race in the offside foreleg. He sat second or third but was paddling the run home before stopping and it was an out of character effort so there had to be something wrong. Just how strong and meaningful this result will prove is hard to quantify but the third finisher Zacada does look a G1 3yo in New Zealand when over ground.
