The winner of this G3 Open Handicap over 2100m was the Australian bred In A Twinkling that last won a race in this very event a year ago and almost doing the same thing. The now 5yo gelding led up last year and under 57kg kicked away to win easily but this year under just half a kilo more he sat second and then went up to lead at the 250m and scored by a length in 2:09.67 (he won in 2:09.69 a year ago). The winners and where they were turning for home were second (three-off the inside and a head from the leader), seventh (six-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), fifth (trail inner and two lengths from the leader), second (one-off the inside and a neck from the leader), led (a head in front and on the fence), eleventh (three-off the inside and five lengths from the leader), second (one-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), fourteenth (five-wide and six lengths from the leader) and third (four-off the inside and half a length from the leader). In A Twinkling after he won this last year was erratic in his next start and tipped out for a spell and today he was fourth up. Today he was winning his fourth race in twenty-two starts and he did finish second in the NZ Derby (G1) over 2400m as a 3yo. When left alone or able to relax running close he is at his best it does seem. His stablemate in this Savy Yong Blonk ran on powerfully for second after settling well back on the inner and the mare looks set for another good Summer. Grand Bouquet ran on well for third after settling back eleventh the inner and this mare looks a Cups player this Summer and early Autumn on how she unleashed today. Justamaiz fought on fourth after taking a clear lead just under a mile from home. He won the G3 Waikato Cup (2400m) in December last year after leading and he looks set to tackle that again and defend his crown. Polzeath finished fifth after leading early then racing third or fourth the inner and he is set for a busy Summer. He won the G2 Avondale Cup (2400m) in February of this year and that looks a target race again. There was over five lengths back to the rest headed by Livin' On A Prayer that battled on from back on the inner then followed by Ocean Bully, which raced seventh then came up wide at the 600m before wilting a tad. The rest disappointed in the main and were beaten almost eight lengths and up to and including almost eleven and a half lengths. The stablemate mates On The Rocks and Pinmedown were poor with the former having 60kg so he had an excuse. Pinmedown on the minimum of 53kg had no excuse and she may be better off racing her own sex. This was an on pace finish (three of the first five home raced near the lead) but the second and third finishers both ran home strongly from well back auguring well for their future engagements.
