Canterbury Belle Stakes (LR)

Age: 3yo Sex: F Type: OPEN

The North Island trained fillies unsurprisingly finished one, two and three. Darci’s Dream has the better manners and got a better trip overall to win by three quarters of a length from Consensus that should have won. Consenus was wide early and wider across the junction to actually turn for home the second deepest filly and well back. She was still eighth at the 200m and seventh at the 100m then detonated with a withering burst. The winning time of 1:10.73 can be compared to an Open Handicap event one race prior that ran 1.09.14 or over nine lengths, which is considerable. Cryptic ran on well once off the inner and into a clear lane the run home after settling down last the fence and staying closer in across the junction. The co-leader the outer La Veuve was swamped late and this South Island trained filly looks to have some scope while Justa Secret boxed on the run home. The improver is another South Island filly in Elusive Catch that after a messy start and being back and wide got home okay. She may need some cut in the ground at least but time will tell. Tempting Place was a co-leader the inner to the home turn and faded late after being third still with 100m to go. Second Time Lucky was ordinary even considering she was three-wide near the pace early then tucked in across the junction. She too may need some cut to perform at her peak. Supremo bled and is barred for a mandatory three months. Another Coup only got warmed up the final stages and should win a maiden very easily when her stable/connections decide to not look so high at blacktype at this stage. The last pair home need to race in maiden only company to win a race but Letsavafling could not have sat any deeper out the back throughout so was ridden poorly covering a vast amount of extra ground on debut.
