Canterbury Gold Cup (G3)

Type: OPEN

This G3 at WFA over 2000m saw the second blacktype race here at Riccarton today be decided by a nasal hair. Saint Emilion had run a deadest shocker last start at G2 in the North Island having prior led and won at G1at Ellerslie when left alone and clocking 2:02.47. Today was a massive drop in class and he led up as usual but ran them along this time and was there to be beaten after setting a solid clip. In fact the rising 7yo was headed clearly at the 250m and looked set to finish second then under a hard whip ride started to come back with 100m to go. He was closing gradually at the 50m and ended up getting in the bob on the line that matters to clock 2:01.31 and record his fourteenth win in thirty-eight starts. The gelding this preparation this year has raced four times for three wins (one at G1and one at G3) and led up each time. The handicapper and South Island trained Who Dares Wins almost won at his first WFA try and it came at G3. The rising 6yo was trained in the North Island and then came to a South Island yard as a maiden and has now won six times. He got a good run fifth or sixth and came through fourth across the top then reached second at the 200m before leading at the 250m and sure to win. The gelding lost the bob on the line when the leader he headed came back at him. All his six wins have come in the telling and distance parameters of 1800m to 2100m. Boots 'N' All ran home strongly for third from ninth on settling and is racing very well at the moment. Son Of Zac was slow out and last on settling but ran home gamely for fourth and could have done with a more rain-affected track. Flying Sardine settled down second last and was seen running on well down the outer. Tommy Tucker had his chance after trailing the winning leader but the rising 10yo did not produce his customary surge and he finished sixth. Nymph Monte got back the inner and came through closer in before battling and ended up seventh beaten over five lengths. Gallant Boy was wide throughout and while mostly with cover he whacked away for eighth beaten almost five and a half lengths when most would have dropped out. Authentic Paddy sat outside the eventual winner and showed nothing the run home except tiredness and his long season has taken a toll on the rising 9yo. Timy Tyler has not won for ages and in thirteen runs at 1800m up to 2147m has not won either so at G3 under WFA looked a stretch. Travimyfriend had a horror run back and four-wide and stopped unsurprisingly after such an overlander. Whether he can run middle distance is still an unknown as covering this amount of extra ground today proved or disproved nothing. Endean Rose had a horror run wide the whole way and stopped badly with the mare in two runs since coming to a new stable having beaten home in total one runner. The winner Saint Emilion should beat these in his sleep let alone getting up by a nose after being ridden hard with the whip to fight back after being headed. This is only a South Island relevant form race as many runners in this were well over the top preparation wise and some may not be seen again next season as racehorses anymore.
