Yesberg Ins. Pegasus Stakes (LR)

WT: 53.0kg Type: OPEN

The track started of Heavy then got upgraded to Soft and the times were a second to two seconds off standard most of the day. The winners in Race order and where they turned for home were seventh (widest and three lengths off lead), third outer (small field), seventh (widest and three lengths of lead), seventh (widest and four lengths of lead), fifth (small field widest and two and a half lengths of lead), fifth (up middle path and length of the lead), fifth (three off inside and two lengths of lead), led wide turning, led (2500m race) and tenth (widest and four lengths of lead). The bias was clearly towards closers and backrunners and well away from the inside with the centre or wider lanes clearly faster travelators or horse escalators for the thoroughbred all day. This Listed 1000m Open Handicap drew just five runners and saw the last on settling Casaquinman angled widest the run home and used the blatantly faster lanes to win by a length and a quarter in 58.95, which for this bionic chute is not a fast time at all. Casaquinman has now on six races from twenty-four starts and today the 6yo was jumping two grades at least and tackling Blacktype for the first time ever. The fact he blew these away was a combination of a weak field, suitable rain-affected footing and track bias playing into his hands. Livin' On A Prayer raced third or fourth in the small field and finished solidly late down the outer to get second with 20m to go, while the leader Passing Shot was caught and headed at the 150m. Morse Code sat outside the leader and wilted but was beaten just over two and a half lengths, while the last runner home Selfie had to be steadied late with heels ahead so his margin of almost four lengths beaten is misleading. The footing and bias meant this race and result was very misleading indeed plus it was a very weak Listed field anyway.
