Speight's Timaru Stakes (LR)

WT: 53.0kg Type: OPEN

This Listed Open Handicap over 1400m saw a $24 easy winner in He Kin Fly, a reject from Hong Kong that is now finding New Zealand depth very accommodating indeed. The winners and where they turned for home today in race order were eleventh (ten-off the fence (widest runner) and four lengths from the leader), fourth (seven-off the fence and half a length from the leader), second (three-off the fence and a neck back), fourth (five-off the fence and a length from the leader), led (on the fence and a length and a half clear), led (one-off the fence and half a length clear), third (four-off the fence and a length from the leader), eighth (six-off the fence and two lengths from the leader), third (trail inner and a length and a half from the leader) and co-leader (two off the fence). The 6yo gelding had prior to today raced in Open Class four times and never paid a dividend but in his first Blacktype try wins easily at Listed level. He was only a four race winner prior to this so was well out of his class but it made no difference as he trailed the leaders and went through to second at the 300m then led at the 150m. He Kin Fly carrying the minimum of 53kg scored by over a length and a quarter in 1:22.07 to capture his fifth win in twenty-two starts. Tomm Jones, a 7yo, also at his first Blacktype outing ran on well from sixth then fifth in the running and got into second at the 25m. Kiwi Ida settled down last on her own and was the widest runner turning for home then unleashed a sustained surge under 57kg with the 4yo mare getting to third with just 20m to go. Feeling The Love, an 8yo mare, led up and kicked away before being headed at the 150m and only got swamped the final 25m. The Precious One started favourite but was ridden very cold and got back ninth and wide then ran home well but too late for fifth and was beaten two and a half lengths. She is bred and raced by the Dennis Bros, who are having a very poor run of late considering their usual high standards and strike rate. He's Gold was an average sixth while Xcuses Xcuses raced second the outer and weakened to be beaten over five lengths. Son Of Maher never looked likely while Morse Code has only ever won up to 1300m so finds that last 100m a real task. El Bee Darci raced seventh wide and never looked a hope with the North Island raider Get Schroeder racing well out of his class found out and distant last. Get Schroeder started third favourite in this Listed event and is just a three-win galloper so the depth was not here. Several of this field were out of form or had not won in a while and the result looks dubious too with the quinella being formed by two older gallopers each having a first ever Blacktype outing.
