This Listed 2000m event for Open Class handicappers saw William Wallace produce a super performance to score after being last early in the field of fourteen. The 8yo gelding prepared in the North Island, who races well here at Riccarton, was also ridden by the apprentice Sarah MacNab and basically looped the field the deepest by far across the top to actually lead the field twelve-off the inside turning for home. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were third (three-wide and half a length from the leader), led (three-off the inside and a head in front), co-leader (one-off turning for home), led (on the inner and half a length ahead), led (seven-off the inside and a length ahead), second (on the inner and two lengths back), third (five-wide and a neck behind), sixth (four-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), led (twelve-off the inside and a head in front) and sixteenth (two-off the inside and six lengths from the leader). Eight of the ten winners turned for home first, second or third showing the bias of the track almost all day. William Wallace sustained that long run to go clear the run home then held on by half a neck in 2:03.67 in what was his first victory at 2000n as well. Today was his seventh win in thirty-four starts and was his first Blacktype victory having failed in all eight of his prior attempts to even make the top three. He has been top five in over half his starts so is a fairly consistent type but his backrunning style has been found out due to track bias over the years. The odds on favourite Communique ($1.70) ran a game second after settling midfield the outer and then being wider with cover across the top but she could not surge with the winner near the home turn. The 4yo mare was sixth and wide turning in and then reached fourth at the 200m and second at the 100m before really unleashing hard but came up a tad short. The winner is twice her age so she has it all ahead of her. Who Dares Wins, also an 8yo but paying $26, ran a game third as he carried topweight of 60kg and raced sixth the inner before working off across the top and coming up fourth turning for home. He reached third at the 200m then was fourth at the 100m but dug deep to regain third the final 25m though was two lengths behind the winner at the line. Camino Rocoso was very wide early then led at the 1200m and once headed narrowly the home turn by the eventual winner he fought well. The 7yo gelding was second still until the 100m and then lost the third placed finish the final 25m. Overtheriver, a 10yo and North Islander, ran on well for fifth beaten three and a half lengths after settling eighth the inner and then being eleventh wider turning for home. Five Princes was next home in sixth but beaten over six lengths after racing well back on the inner and then reaching sixth at the 200m. Owen Patrick, was wide early before going up second then being third midrace to the home turn and he whacked away for seventh. Diorissimo ran on late from last on settling early after a sluggish start and being twelfth on setting down. Zentessa raced ninth before going up four-wide across the top and was tenth and deep turning for home before battling away for ninth the final 100m beaten almost eighth and a half lengths. The rest got beaten ten lengths and up to over eighteen lengths. The winner was too good as he looped the whole field in a couple of hundred metres the held out all challengers thereafter. The runner up has a lot more wins in store being half his age. Not a super strong field at all so probably Listed was its correct rating.
