The winner of this G3 feature mile was the $21 seven-year-old mare Ritani ridden by the apprentice Kozzi Asano that scored by a length and a quarter in 1:47.59. This was her ninth win in forty-two starts and was her first piece of Blacktype gained in seven attempts and it came in the form of a victory. The winners and where they came from on the home turn were third (four-off the inside and length and a half behind the leader), tenth (eight-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), second (eight-off the inside and three-quarters of a length behind the leader), led (seven-off the inside and six lengths in front), sixth (ten-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), second (six-off the inside and half a length from the leader), led (seven-off the inside and half a length in front), fourth (one-off and a length and a half from the leader), thirteenth (fourteen-off the inside and four-lengths from the leader). Ritani trailed the leaders handy the inner and then drove through to lead near the home turn seven-off the inside and though headed soon after she came back to lead at the 100m. The runner up and second favourite Justaskme stormed home from miles back and wider turning for home and he was ridden by the apprentice Hazel Schofer. The 6yo gelding carried 60kg to the winners 55kg and showed just how unlucky he was by winning on the third day of this meeting. Third home was Verry Flash that carried 54kg ran on very strongly from well back and wide and the 7yo gelding would also place on day Two and day Three of this meeting so it made for a good earn over the week for the North Islander. Fourth home was the favourite Tappys One at 55.5kg that ran on strongly from back and wide to the home turn and he was beaten just under three lengths. He would win on day Two of this meeting and run fourth on day Three so in his last seven runs he has won five times and run fourth twice. Fifth home and beaten three lengths at $74 was Blueys Chance that settled down last then improved along the inside across the top and came through second turning for home and led soon after. He succumbed at the 100m then got swamped late when tiring but he certainly gave his backers a sight at huge money. Sixth home and beaten almost three and three-quarter lengths was Happy Star that settled back then surged and reached third at the 300m before wilting. Next home was Take The Deal that ran on okay from well back and was beaten over five and a quarter lengths. Mont Ventoux ran eighth and was beaten just under nine and a half lengths after settling in the rear and wide then moving up the deepest to be sixth turning for home before weakening. The rest got beaten almost ten and a half lengths and as far as just under thirty-eight and a half lengths. The footing was a very testing Heavy11 and bar the second runner it was a lightweight's finish. Three of the first five home were paying $21, $19 and $74 so it was a real conundrum for bettors too. The winner drew the ace then the next five runners home drew barriers eleven or wider. The runner up won on the last day and the fourth finisher won on day Two and the third finisher would place on days Two and Three as well so the form stood up.
