Age: 3yo Type: OPEN

This G3 3yo only event over 1200m drew just eight runners and only three had any real scope at this level or higher. The local filly Prom Queen ran odds on and once again she daylighted her opposition after sitting outside the pace. She bounded clear at the 300m and was in total control at the 150k with her rider not once but twice looking back to see where her opposition were and if anything was coming to offer any threat. The winning margin was two and a half lengths but it could have been more and the time of 1:11.15 is quite telling as it was four lengths superior to the Open Handicap run in the race prior. Prom Queen is not very big but she is fast and can sustain speed plus is able to quicken the run home when her rivals are usually feeling the strain. It was her seventh win in eight starts and the only time she got beaten saw her run third coming over 800m at Wingatui. The reason that is relevant as she has won her seven races to this point on just two tracks only, Riccarton and Ruakaka. The filly was one of three winners on the day at home for the Kenny and Lisa Rae and Krystal Williams stable. Prom Queen is the best filly that Rae has prepared since (Our) Egyptian Raine that won ten races and one of them came at G1, three at G2, one at G3 and three at Listed level. She was staggeringly placed second at G1 eight times (in New Zealand and Australia) and finished third at G1 twice plus placed second at G2 three times. The unusual connection or link between Rae and Prom Queen and (Our) Egyptian Raine came in a Listed 2yo filly only race at Avondale during April of 2001. (Our) Egyptian Raine won the race and third home was a filly called Finishing School that would later turn out to be the dam of Prom Queen. The race result for the first four home has since proven a good one for both results on the track and in the breeding barn. (Our) Egyptian Raine has left six winning foals and three of them have won five races with the best performed being Egyptian Symbol whose five-win record included a G3 win. She also has been placed eight times from her nineteen starts so far with that including a G2 placing, three G3 placings and two Listed placings. The runner up was Zirna (won four races including once at G1) and she has left six multiple race winning foals with Crafty Irna (4 wins including a G3 and Listed win and she was G2 placed) her best performer. Fourth home was Critic that would win nine races and one of those came at G1 and three at Listed level plus she was placed at G2 twice, G3 once and Listed twice. Her only winning foal is Critical Angel that also has a G3 second in the record too. Aim Smart ran a game second fresh up and will improved tenfold next time seen out while his stablemate Felton Road ran on for a distant third after being away awkwardly and second last at the outset. He was beaten the same margin from second as that of the runner up was to the winner. Global Thinking was a distant fourth but the effort was okay as she was wide and moved up fourth then third doing overtime in the running. The on debut pacemaker Not Usual Heart wilted to finish fifth beaten just under eight lengths and would be a moral in a maiden event. The rest were beaten nine to almost fifteen lengths and would be better back to their own grades or lesser class. Prom Queen will be tried at 1400m likely next time seen out then all going well will tackle the G1 1000 Guineas over a mile at her beloved Riccarton in the second week of November. Can she run the mile is anyone’s guess but after leading early in her career and a ripping and a tearing she now relaxes outside the pace and then quickens so there is a Rae of hope. Aim Smart and Felton Road look Group performers this season for sure.
