This Listed fillies and mares only mile saw the emergence of a 4yo in Darscape Princess keep winning and look strong on the line. Darscape Princess was going for her hattrick and handled the rise to Listed level easily after sitting outside the leader. She took the front 200m out and held on strongly to win by three-quarters of a length and clock 1:34.40 for the mile. As a comparison today a Ratings75 1600m held before this was run and won in 1:36.22 or just under two seconds slower so almost a dozen lengths inferior. It was the fourth win in ten starts for Darscape Princess and she is still filling out her substantial frame so she can be even better next season. She has performed on most types of footing and had before today tried blacktype once before when fifth at G3 as a 3yo filly against her own age and sex. The winner of that race in Volpe Veloce won at G1 level on New Years Day this year as a 4yo mare. La Fille En Jeu set the pace and tried hard once headed at the 200m with this seven-win 6yo mare earning her first blacktype placing. She had been getting close this season with three runs at G2 or G3 for two fourths and a fifth and the G2 fourth came under WFA against allcomers so had extra kudos. Bronsteel ran third in this last year at long odds and today paying even more repeated that effort plus both times she started from awkward barrier draws. She raced midfield and wide with cover and ran home soundly to beaten a length and a quarter. Slimline sat fourth or fifth and had a ding donger battle for third place the final 200m and lost that fight by a short head. Asama Blue the favourite settled down sixth the inner and fought on well to be beaten a length and three-quarters but was never a wining chance from basically three back the fence. Don’t Look Back ran on well for sixth after settling down tenth while Sleek Secret did well to hold seventh beaten three lengths after being four-wide in the midfield or further back for much of the race. Bring To The Block was tardy but seen running on from the rear trio. Petite En Jeu weakened after working forward wide fifth then fourth and up to third across the top so can be forgiven. Calligraphy from a bad draw and after being tightened and checked at the start is another that can be excused. Swiss Precision was found with a hairline fracture of the fetlock post race and has been retired. Tessastock fresh up got back and made a wide run across the top but the effort told while Pretty Good Excuse, the South Island trained 7yo mare was outclassed. Lots of winners will come from this race with fillies and mares having more opportunities than any other in New Zealand racing plus this looks a reliable future source. Tactical speed and a secondary run home kick all are big ticks for Darscape Princess that has it still all ahead.
