Six out of the nine winners at the meeting won either hard on the inside or two to three widths out to show a blatant bias as is often the case at this Tauranga track. One other winner came up the middle (slightly closer in) to nearly make the percentage almost an unbelievable number. The outcome of the Listed feature today was solely determined by track bias and what path the respective riders chose to take on Queens Rose (winner) and The Filly (runner up). Queens Rose after sitting second the outer was deliberately steered to the inside turning for home and won the race right there and then, as three of the first four races on the card had clearly shown prior that this was a faster lane area on a wet track. The Filly after leading early then being headed pierced through the field ominously to take the front three-off nearing the home turn but the senior rider atop Mark Hills surprisingly angled very wide thereafter. It was a massive mistake as 100m further on The Filly was second and Queens Rose had a break so Hills started to angle back towards the inner the closing stages and got within half a length. To say The Filly should have won is an understatement, as the angling that wide when in front must have cost a couple of lengths conservatively. It was the eighth win from twenty starts for Queens Rose and rider Vinnie Colgan gets the kudos as he read the track correctly again. Four runs ago at this same track and after sitting outside the pace he won on the mare by angling wider the run home because the track demanded such an approach then. The distant third finisher was the filly Choice and she ran on well from the back after a tardy start. Her path plotted is telling as when wider on the home turn she was not picking up as well as her rider had hoped so once angled back to the middle or slightly closer in she found the line. Hostage finished fourth after being back on the inner and coming three-off the run home. North And South did well all things considered for sixth after rearing in the gates and settling down a clear last. The mare was drawn the deepest runner halfway up the run home to make ground so her effort was commendable indeed. The well-backed Alleyoop stopped as did Aaja Nachle (badly) to show directionally (clockwise) for the former and distance wise (1400m) for the latter is where they are still suspect. Both never handled the WFA scale either it seems. The top two are always wet track competitive at this time of the year and when against their own sex become even stronger prospects. Choice loves wet ground and should be in for a good winter while North And South should clean up too if her starts do not become as messy again.
