The luckless last start Soriano got some justice today at G2 over a mile with a narrow but impressive win. The mare would have won at G3 two runs ago but had her inside surge halted and ended up a close fourth duly promoted to third after an inquiry. Today she was snagged back to the rear and stayed the inside until steered a middle route at the 200m before unleashing a stout burst to lead at the 10m. It was her eighth win in forty-eight starts but just her second success over a mile. She has run remarkably at G1, G2, G3 or Listed level now in her last twenty-nine starts in a row, which may in itself be a record. The runner up Kawi was desperately unlucky but did have the chance to come to the outer near the point of the home turn and not doing so certainly cost him victory. He was tardy then recovered quickly before ending up fourth the outer in a good spot and although a tad flat nearing the home turn, so were most of his rivals too. Once he stayed in the blockage ahead came and then when diving through one-off did come home powerfully to be beaten a head. Kawi it should be noted is still to win clockwise. Julinsky Prince fought hard for a close third after being wide then working up outside the leader. Survived ran on strongly down the outer for a close fourth and his new trainer seems to have worked him out well. Farm Boy rallied well in a tight finish and his coming up outside Kawi turning for home cost that runner the race. Sierra Beel led and was swamped but only got beaten a length and three quarters. Shuka ran on late after being flat plus back and wide turning for home. Sakhee’s Soldier after trailing the leaders weakened out the closing stages and may not have come up this time in though his record does show he deserves another chance. The winning time of 1:34.38 was sound on the day as no other mile event got close to breaking 1:35. Most of these runners will be WFA competitors for the rest of Spring and over summer so are sure to see each other again and again. Soriano does cash in over this period while Kawi will look to break his clockwise duck and after a light campaign then be set for the Melbourne autumn.
