The manmade track bias at Te Rapa was once again in force with six of the nine winners on the day either leading, sitting second or no worse than trailing the leaders on the inner or outer. The other three winners saw two of them come from three back the fence so not far away and not spending an extra penny plus the inside lanes were faster by a margin. The lone run on winner came in a Ratings 85 mile that was run almost a length faster than the G2 feature for fillies and mares on the day and it is worth also pointing out that the leader in this ran second so the bias was blatant as usual. This Listed 1400m Open Handicap saw Thee Auld Floozie win with ease after trailing the leaders and working off the inside near the home turn. The mare surged to the lead quickly at the 300m and was in total control thereafter to score by almost two lengths. She clocked 1:22.22, which was bettered by Ratings65 in the opening event but some rain between then and here made all the difference plus it amplified the already in play track bias. The 5yo mare was winning her eighth race in twenty-five starts and it was her first Listed success to go with a G3 win as a 3yo filly. Her stablemate Seize The Moment sat second the outer and kept fighting on well to finish runner up while Hasselhoof ran home strongly from fifth the fence and looks a next up winner properly placed clockwise. Lasarla ran home well for fourth and showed her last start G2 win against her own sex was not a total fluke assisted by track bias. Southern Icon can be forgiven after knuckling at the start and being back and wide when normally a leader and then getting sent up fast to grab the front after 400m. He was let run along across the top before being headed at the 300m then weakening to finish fifth. All Roads like a few runners on the day blundered early through losing their footing and it is an ongoing factor with such a heavily sand-slitted track as 500kg plus animals try to get traction from a standing start out of the gates. He will learn from the first left-hand outing today since a debut second back in April of last year and should handle this grade particularly clockwise. Fully Funded and Somethingvain both disappointed but each are far better gallopers right-handed so can be cut some slack. Track bias clouds many results at this venue as some days so many runners have zero chances owing to either racing patterns or barrier draws. Thee Auld Floozie is competitive at this level and against her own sex so while racing well can be entered and perform in a myriad of events over summer. Seize The Moment needs to be kept left-handed but has ample options still ahead. Hasselhoof is the next upper for sure and it should be Ellerslie on Boxing Day or New Years Day. Lasarla has more options now and likely her main season aim to come will be a G1 mile for her sex in the autumn at Te Aroha.
