This G2 over 2000m at WFA for fillies and mares saw the favourite Supera win easily and show she has a better distance range now for next season where tackling all comers seems the logical Spring progression. The winners and where they turned for home in race order were seventh (six-off the inside and three lengths form the leader), third (four-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader), led (one-off the inside and a neck clear), fourth (on the fence and length and a half behind the leader), second (six-off the inside and a length from the winner), fifth (six-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), eighth (seven-off the inside and three and a half lengths from the leader), eighth (three-off the inside and three lengths from the leader), seventh (eight-off the inside and two and a half lengths from the leader) and led (one-off the inside and a length clear). Supera settled back and was tenth still across the top then came the widest turning for home and eighth before being let rip and the response was superior. The 4yo mare surged into third at the 200m and led at the 100m before coming clear to win by almost two lengths in 2:03.20, which is not a great time but the track was iffy with kickback galore causing a lot of the flops on the day. So many winners today in a nine-race card were deliberately steered wide turning for home on a track rated as a Dead4 due to track presentation that includes the dreadful excessive kickback factor of stinging sand. Supera was winning her sixth race from thirteen starts and she has come good this year in particular with a G3 win and now a G2 win plus in between a close up G1 second. Jessiegee ran on strongly for second after sitting eighth then seventh the inner and she has been racing well of late with prior to today a fourth at G3 and before that a second at G3. Our Abbadean raced sixth the inner and worked off across the top before surging into second at the 250m then ended up third at the 50m. Nicoletta led up and had no pressure then kicked clear by two lengths the run home and still had a length lead at the 200m but once again does not run out the 2000m fully and weakened to finish fourth beaten over three and a half lengths. She now has raced at 2000m to 2400m ten times for three placings, three fourths and four misses. Fiscal Fantasy ran on late centre track for fifth beaten just under five lengths after settling back tenth the inner. Hinerangi raced third the outer then came up second across the top but weakened the run home while Yearn raced fifth the outer and does not run middle distance at this stage. Tantalising from fourth the inner was ordinary though did cop some strife from the runner up taking her line at the 300m. She's Poppy plugged on from the rear duo on the inner and Zentessa got warmed up very late from alongside her on settling. Etah James was poor as was China Star (which needs to lead or trail to be effective these days), while Lady Painton was outclassed at WFA after sitting outside the leader. This was not a very deep field of mares but the winner Supera has the most scope and ability and has a margin over these right now so none of them have any hope of beating her next season. Our Abbadean has more wins in store as middle distance and longer is her strength while Jessiegee ran another sound race. Fiscal Fantasy has more to come and being a 4yo she should have her best to come next season. Nicolette won a G1 fillies and mares at WFA over a mile prior to today but that was due to track bias and Supera would have beaten her otherwise. Supera gets the upside tick for sure and her second dam is Ethereal (8 wins including four at G1of which saw the 2001 Caulfield/Melbourne Cups double achieved).
