The winner of this G2 at WFA event over 1200m was Mascarpone fresh up after racing third then fourth the outer and then surging up after being wide turning for home. The 5yo gelding led at the 200m and ran clear then held on to win by a neck in 1:11.33 for his seventh win in twenty starts. He has a Listed win and a G1 third to go with this G2 win today and interestingly all have come here at Te Rapa, The winners and where they came from were third (four-off the inside and half a length from the leader), second (five-off the inside and a head from the leader), led (one-off the inside and two lengths in front), led (one-off the inside and half a length in front), third (five-off the inside and a length from the leader), fourth (seven-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), fourth (one-off the inside and length and a half from the leader), fifth (five-off the inside and two lengths from the leader), led (six-off the inside and a neck in front) and led (four-off the inside and a head in front). Of the nine races held today six of the winners turned for home first (four), second (one) or third (two) and the others turned in fourth (twice) and fifth (once) but all of them were never far from the action on straightening up. The track bias was once again colossal at this sand-slitted venue. Mascarpone does go well fresh up but his price today of $30 tells you he was in decent field and needed several things to work in his favour, which they clearly did. Second home and finishing very hard late was the Irish bred 8yo Gino Severini that raced eleventh and was angled wide turning for home before unleashing hard the last bit. He has a good record fresh but started in this at $105, so the distance of 1200m was thought to be well short of his best it seems. Third home was Pris De Fer at $25 and the stablemate of the $1.60 hotpot Avantage, with that Australian bred mare running an ordinary eighth and beaten over four lengths, ran on well from midfield the inner on settling. The 6yo drove through late but was beaten almost two and a half lengths. Fourth home at $50 was Harlech fresh up that raced back tenth and ran on solidly late to be beaten just under two and three-quarter lengths. Next home was the stayer Ocean Billy at $65 that rushed home from second last on settling and he was still eleventh with 100m to go. Sixth home was the 6yo Festivity at $33, another stablemate of the hotpot Avantage, which was wide then went up second and attacked across the top to the home turn before being swamped late. Seventh home was More Wonder at $74, the stablemate of the winner, which settled well back early but ran home well the closing stages to be beaten less than three and a half lengths. Eighth home was the big flop Avantage that was caught wide and improved to fourth wide then third wide in the open and raced there until the home turn. The 6yo mare was fifth and flat at the 200m and weakened out to be beaten over four lengths in a shock flop considering she had won at G1 nine times. The other big failure in the field was Tavi Mac that ran a clear second favourite and raced in the trail and drove through to lead at the 250m but weakened out and was swamped late. He finished alongside Avantage and punters were left stunned at both runners flopping so badly. The last four home were beaten just under six lengths and as much as fourteen lengths The result was a total blowout for bettors and a clean up for Bookmakers for sure. Avantage was retired soon after this event and auctioned off for $4.1 million online.
