Maritimo was a bundle of nerves pre-start but sometimes for juveniles that is a good thing and when the energy is released on the track the outcome is an explosive detonation. The filly with some size and speed sat outside the pace and then when her rider pushed the length stride button the response was devastating. In the blink of any eye the filly had gapped her rivals to score by four and a half lengths and it could have been more. She clocked 57.03 for the 1000m but times down the chute at Trentham cannot be trusted as some bionic times have been allowed to stand for decades. Never believe times for 800m, 1000m and 1200m down the chute at Trentham as the posted clockings defy all common sense and make Black Caviar seem just an average sprinter. Maritimo has won both directions and can cope on cutting out ground plus has won a trial on slow footing so looks the real deal. Her main aim early next year will be the Karaka Million at Ellerslie. No real excuses for the rest as the winner was simply a level above these. The runner up Platinum Express and fourth finisher O’Dianne had every conceivable chance being near the pace throughout but could not go with the winner. The third finisher Battle Plan was okay as he began tardily but then got through to fourth the inner. Hocus Pocus covered extra ground so was not totally disgraced. The well backed debutant The Neon Icon was disappointing but will learn from the outing and should not be in such a fast run race next time he is produced. Kudos only goes too the winner as she has all the attributes of a juvenile born to run and earn big stake money.
