Wellfield Desert Gold Stakes (G3)

Age: 3yo Sex: F Type: OPEN

The undoubted best 3yo filly in New Zealand as of now is the Australian bred Platinum Witness and she showed again why on a roomy track. The daughter of California Dane had been too good in the G1 1000 Guineas last spring over a mile and due to some setbacks had not been seen since. It did not matter as she was way superior to a dubious strength G3 mile field for her age and sex. Platinum Witness easily beat into third in the 1000 Guineas a since impressive winner at stakes class in Belle Miraaj. A week prior she ran a game fourth behind the males in the G1 2000 Guineas over a mile behind the impressive Turn Me Loose, so she is the gun filly for sure and has the form to back it up. She had a nice run the outer today and when sent up deeper turning in strode clear the final 200m to clock a sedate 1:36.04 so the race was not too taxing. It was the third win in eleven starts for the filly and it could have been more but for some bad luck and finding track bias and traffic. All her wins so far have come at a mile so middle distance does seem more than likely to be her next mountain to climb whether that be at home in New Zealand or in Australia over the autumn for much more lucrative money and prestige. The leader on settling Attention Seeker fought on for second after setting her own terms while the third finisher Exquisite Jewel ran on well late for third and looks an Oaks type. Vive La Difference was green the concluding stages when fourth after having a good run throughout. She was a good thing beaten resuming prior. Caramac was big after bounding in the air at the start and settling down a clear last. The filly almost loomed too soon into fourth at the 200m and wilted to fifth but she is name to note for the rest of this season. Queenofthepalace has another win or two this season properly placed and wet ground will not bother her. The rest will need lesser opposition and /or footing to help them and hinder the better fillies around should they tackle stakes class again. The winner is the yardstick in New Zealand now for 3yo fillies and looks like middle distance will see her even more dominant. Exquisite Jewel looks an Oaks contender and being out of a Montjeu dam the trip will suit too. Caramac has already won races on dry and wet ground so is versatile and can be followed with confidence from now on wherever her astute stable run the filly.
