This G1 under WFA over 1600m was the second leg of the Hawke’s Bay Triple Crown but run two leeks after the last leg was already run and today was held at Trentham due to an abandoned second day at Hastings. It has set back the whole season for many gallopers and made a mockery of the form worth of that third leg with so many underdone and so many missing. This field was suspect for genuine depth and so many in this were an after thought once that fateful second ay at Hastings was abandoned. Julinsky Prince won easily after a dream sit fourth the outer in a slow run race and sprint home to clock 1:37.81. He was recording his tenth win in thirty-one starts but was never looked upon as serious G1 winner and only a placegetter at best but was in the right place at the right time today. His five runs at G1 prior to today had returned a third, a fourth, an eighth, an eleventh and a twelfh. He does love a mile however with nine of his ten wins coming at the trip. It was a first G1 too for his trainer Fraser Auret and the rider Jonathon Parkes, who had been dislodged from his mount in the Listed juvenile event earlier in the card, was not going to miss this ride. Allez Eagle got a cheap lead but could not hold out the winner so that lingering doubt he can run a strong mile still exists. Platinum Witness was a super third running on potently and she has come back in sublime order as was second up here deep ended into a G1 at WFA against all comers. She will not fear anything she meets in New Zealand based on this effort as there is still so much more improvement to come. Shuka, which was unbeaten here prior to today in three outings, ran on well late for fourth in a race pace that did not help him one iota. Authentic Paddy trailed and had every chance while Kisses was big for sixth after rearing at the start and being last early. The mare came through on the inner the run home and briefly reached fourth before wilting but the recovery effort was genuine. Waikaha is a winner in waiting and did well to find the line after being back and wide albeit with cover. The favourite Addictive Habit, winner of the third leg of the G1 Triple Crown at Hastings, was awful after settling midfield the inner and it does highlight how dubious that race and result is looking. Authentic Paddy finished fifth in that G1 2040m event at WFA and had every hope today when fifth as well. Danza Lad is a wet tracker while Ginner Hart had a nightmare wide trip and is not a miler either. Spin Doctor was atrocious and away from Te Rapa is always a risk. The biggest flop however was Recite in finishing a distant last. The mare was not well away but recovered to sixth only to have nothing to offer turning for home. The off Dead6 track at Trentham saw ordinary times posted outside the chute events (800m to 1200m), which are bionic times no matter the footing. This was a sedate run G1 race and the first two home were running one and four throughout plus so many well backed runners flopped badly too including the first and second favourites namely Adductive Habit and Recite. The one to follow out of the race is clearly Platinum Witness while a few reputations certainly need rebuilding after today.
