Wakefield Challenge Stakes (G2)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

This G2 juvenile event over 1100m was marred by the Caddy-style gates in use for some reason on a G1 day causing the hotpot Hugo The Boss to be declared a non-runner. Part of his gate slammed the youngster when malfunctioning and swinging back into him rather than staying open. The winner was an upsetter in Leading Role that trailed third the inner and drove through to lead on the fence at the 50m. He clocked 1:02.85, which cannot possibly be believed as most chute times posted at Trentham but also this is a 2yo. Cavallucci fought well for second after sitting there for most of the race while the leader Dontpokethetiger wilted to third. Just You ran on okay late and the rest were one-battling the run home. May well end up a totally irrelevant race, if not already, and not just for the epidemic of Caddy starting gate problems now plaguing New Zealand racing and sapping all confidence from the betting public. Too many meetings are using these ancient and untrustable starting stalls and to make matters worse still at some G1 meetings (today an example) and when there are only 22 of these top shelf races a season it defies belief in this day and age.
