The most impressive winner of the entire day had to be Mabeel in winning the G3 Open Handicap mile by four lengths with plenty in the tank left too it must be stated. The late maturing now 5yo raced outside the leader on settling then after striding up at the 400m took the front effortlessly at the 300m and powered away to embarrass the field and clock 1:35.11. The time is significant as it is almost eleven lengths superior to the G1 3yo mile held the race before this where the $1.30 hotpot Xtravagant could only finish fourth beaten over two lengths. Mabeel was having his first look at the mile today too so gets even more credit for the romp and it was his fifth win in nine stats with more to come the way he let go the run home. Seize The Moment chased in vain for second but the winner carried 4.5kg less. Mae West fought on for third after racing handy behind them and just shaded a brave Flavigny that did a lot of work wide in the running. Fast Learner ran on well from the back under 57.5kg while the leader across the top in Irion once headed by the winner was passed by several late too. Kolonel Kev was okay as he got held up turning for home back and wide and was warming up late. Savaria was not too bad but she is a G1 NZ Oaks winner on the track so maybe should have run on better. The rest were battling and some like Opulent, Tie Me Down and Another Coup were dreadful the run home. Mabeel with his tactical speed and secondary kick the run home looks more than capable or scaling greater heights. His trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young are moving to Melbourne to train starting next season and will have a tidy team to chase the bigger stakemoney (the main reason for the move). Mabeel could well be one of them and it will be interesting to see if he can stretch out to 2000m as then a lot more earning option windows are opened up. Seize The Moment lost no admirers as did Fast Learner while Flavigny was gutsy and Savaria can be forgiven.
