Wallaceville Wellington Cup (G2)

WT: 52kg Type: OPEN

The 2016 G2 Wellington Cup on its return to 3200m, after many years as just a 2400m race, saw European breeding deliver in the form of Mister Impatience at $28. The field depth was not great at all and four of the first five home were paying between $18 and $50. The trailer on the inner throughout Mister Impatience since coming to New Zealand before today has had four runs for three fifths and a twelfth and raced dour mostly. He had struggled in Australia over many starts with his two wins there being a Benchmark 75 at Ballarat over 3000m and at the Sunshine Coast over 3200m in the Queensland Cup. Mister Impatience was winning his fifth race today from thirty-two starts and the 6yo gelding is now live on a 250K bonus should he win the G1 Auckland Cup the first week of March. He needed every inch of the Trentham run home to get up in the last stride to clock 3:21.60. Pentathon started second favourite and may have won if his rider Rosie Myers had not detonated the 4yo to stride up and lead at the 350m, as that is a fair way out to hold on for in a two-mile race. He is only a 4yo so has it all ahead if the tank is not emptied too soon in his career and may have a jumping future several years down the track too. Sampson tried to lead throughout and fought on well though the first pair were superior too him by over two lengths at the line. Snow Secret a three-win 4yo mare ran on well for fourth and should be a Cups player in New Zealand next season but might try the G1 Auckland Cup this autumn if she can gain a start at Ellerslie. Skybird ran on well late too and for a three-win mare she also highlighted the lack of depth in the field. Jimmy Mac was poor as favourite when sixth beaten seven and a half lengths and the tactics adopted did not suit him at all. He had been winning regularly this season after racing in the trail then prior to today was ridden cold out the back and ran home hard. Today he was sitting eighth the outer and then got sent up wide at the 1200m before sitting second the outer 800m from home. It was no surprise he found nothing the run home as that has never been in his racing career pattern to move so soon in a stamina race. Blood Brotha bled and gets an automatic three months bad but still beat home six other runners and that does not say much for those behind him as he is a 10yo. King Kamada was ordinary as third favourite and Show The World was appalling in finishing last as he had finished fourth in the G1 Auckland Cup (3200m) last year that also saw King Kamada place. The depth and G1 rating of that race is now under huge scrutiny too. Nashville did not stay the 3200m but with him he does run more shockers these days than eyecatchers. Mister Impatience is a one-batting grinder but can stay though a Queensland Cup winner taking out the G2 Wellington Cup does not help the current rating of the race at all. The result this year may be detrimental to it holding a G2 rating with a couple of three-win mares finding the line better than anything else for fourth and fifth. Expect to see more imports appear in New Zealand for the 3200m Cup Triple Crown and especially now Mister Impatience was able to win at G2.
