The dreadful holding Trentham footing once again cast a pall over the form worth of the G3 1600m as the heavy glue today simply ruined the chances of so many. The noted mudlark Bel Sorriso won by a long head in 1:39.89 and was fresh up since July. She was well back on the inner and then came through closer in between runners at the 400m before reaching fourth at the 100m. The 5yo mare led at the 25m and was recording her eighth win from twenty-three starts today. Cruiser went his third huge race in as many starts this campaign for second and the 8yo is just a two-race winner having only start number twelve today so has had soundness and health issues for many years. Big Dreamer fought hard for third and the four-win mare had flopped badly at her last two runs so the form turnaround was surprising and more so when her record suggests she does not like slow or heavy ground. Get That Jive the favourite was an honest fourth but never looked comfortable in the footing and when he went up from sixth on settling to lead at the 200m the usual ping to go clear was not there. He got run over the final 100m and lost third money right on the post. A graphic display of how the Trentham footing skewered the form is Get That Jive fresh up three runs ago beat Cruiser at the same weight by over two lengths yet today was over one and a half lengths behind it. Authentic Paddy was wide on the pace and led at the 300m before becoming anchored under his 60kg but was only beaten just under three lengths into fifth. Justlikeyasister ran on okay down the outside from second last midrace while Blathwayt after blowing the start badly was battling on okay from a clear last on settling. The rest were plugging only while three of the four on or near the pace stopped badly. Sampson was four-wide fourth in the running so will sleep well but also it should be noted that of the on pacers Heavens Keep and Rocknrolla stopped liked pricked balloons while Authentic Paddy with 7kg more than the pair kept going. The result cannot be trusted at all as several were poorly away from the gates and then three or four riders went silly in front plus the footing was awful and too many could not handle it. A mudlark won it from a two-win injury prone 8yo and a non-mudder out of form four-win mare so that says it all really.
