Lj Hooker Manawatu Breeders (G3)

Sex: FM Type: OPEN

The track at Trentham was a bog as usual and hosted this G3 fillies and mares 2000m under the WFA scale due to the Awapuni meeting set for the day prior being abandoned earlier in the week due to minuscule nominations and a likely bottomless track. The folly was that today a G1 fillies and mares mile was contested at Te Rapa so this played second or third fiddle and was a very weak field indeed. The irony too was the race still was run on heavy footing. The winner Mangaroa Flo Jo was a second up visiting 6yo mare that had run stone cold last resuming, so this was some sort of form reversal. Clearly she liked the mud as she was beaten eighteen lengths first up in a Benchmark 85 and was up in grade here plus 3.5kg. She came from the rear duo and was sent up deep across the top before swimming to the lead with 300m to go. The winning margin was half a length and the 2000m covered in a paltry 2:11.19 to record her sixth win in thirty-two starts. Today was her first ever blacktype earned after four attempts prior at Listed, G2 and G3 recording two sixths, a tenth and an eleventh. Classic Touch, a 4yo mare having just her sixth start and rising multiple grades finished second to show just how weak the field truly was and how testing the wet ground was too. She sat second before taking the lead across the top then getting headed at the 300m but railed well in the mud. Bella’s Delight finished third after sitting fourth most of the way on the outer and got into the blacktype bearing position with 100m to go. Wildflower the favourite finished fourth beaten just over a length after being crowded early and settling down in the rear duo. She ran home well but too late and the solidly built 4yo mare is much better on decent footing plus she still has it all ahead. Cassie Anne has never gained any blacktype in eleven attempts prior to today and momentarily looked a hope to break that drought when third at the 200m only for reality to sink in. Ekarosa led up and once headed across the top tried to lodge another bid before weakening while Amarone one-batted home from back and wide. The other trio got beaten over seven lengths and up to almost ten lengths and were struggling before the home turn. This was nowhere near a G3 field and barely of Listed class plus being run on a bog it has no real worth except as wet track form. Three mares got lucky today by getting G3 blacktype on their dance cards.
