The track was a tricky wet at Wanganui and in the first four races three winners came from the rear and the other one led all the way to put doubt into bettors minds and dent wagering confidence. This Listed juvenile 1200m event drew an average field and just eight went to the barriers but with all 2yo racing some can improve tenfold for next season and others can be caught up maturity-wise and be exposed badly as 3yos. The clear leader in this on settling was the rank outsider Glide Queen, with the speedy squib filly at $68 puncturing and headed off before the home turn then stopping badly. The eventual winner London Express came from last on settling and handled the footing, which was the most determinative and decisive factor all day. The filly had won her prior start on a bog and the rise to Listed grade was not an issue as she swam over the top of them to win by half a length in 1:16.59. It was her second win in four starts and her first at blacktype plus it highlighted her sire Shamexpress is leaving many mudder winners of late. Qiji Express the favourite was fifth wide then urged up third turning for home before taking the lead with 250m to go. The colt tried hard to stave them off and was only run over the final 15m. He provided his sire Shamexpress with the quinella and further evidence of being a swim sire at this juncture (four of his five successful juvenile progeny wins have come on soft or heavy footing). It should be noted the only two males juveniles in the field formed the quinella. Secret Allure raced fourth then went through to challenge across the top to the home turn and was second at the 250m. The filly was third at the 100m trying hard and was a comfortable third at the line well ahead of the next runner home. She was the only two race winner in the field and both came on slow footing. Sentimental Miss fought on late from second last on settling and clearly handled the footing more than many others. Zaniah is a well-built filly that floundered in the footing the run home closer in when given her head and is a total forgive. She has size and presence and her scope will be shown when on top of the ground next season so jot the name of the Australian bred filly down now. The rest stopped in the footing and cannot swim. This was a wet weather result and five of the field had won a race at least and three of them formed a clear cut trifecta and the other pair did not or could not swim. Zaniah the takeaway from the race for next season as the real filly will be seen when underfoot is not a bog.
