This Listed 3yo over the unusual trip of 1500m came on a clearly off Wingatui track as the times all day showed being down markedly from standard. Every winner came from either in front or trailing the leaders and only the Race Three victor came from further back. The bias was blatant and with times being clearly off you would think more runners would be able to stay within range early and at the finish due to sluggish paced but that was not the case. Team Parsons had two runners in this and formed the quinella with the longer odds runner Residential form reversing to score at $15 having been well beaten at her prior start by many of those she conquered today. She took a trail and got a dream run the inside turning for home to take the front at the 200m and then held on by a nostril flare to beat her stablemate Starvoia that started a warm favourite. It was her third win in nine starts and her first at blacktype but also in that formline she has had three massive flops so is very hit and miss indeed. Starvoia was in a handy spot the outer then lost her place surrounded across the top but strode up fifth centre track turning for home and was let loose. Her usual dynamic ping was not there and that may have been more to do with the off footing but then she was second coming at the 100m only to miss when seemingly sure to score. Showemup ran home powerfully down the outer from the back for a good third and has now done that twice in blacktype events with cut in the ground or wetter clearly helping the filly. Raise You Ten won the Listed Gore Guineas (1335m) at his prior start over many of these (the second and third finishers that day filled the same two placings here but reversed) but today had to settle for fourth albeit being the first male home. He was ridden closer than normal on settling but had his chance. Dontpokethetiger ran on okay for fifth from last after settling back but was defeated over four and a half lengths. Zigwig ran on distantly after losing a midfield spot to be second last across the top and will be a must include next time seen out if on a fairer racing surface and track. Wonder Woman did a bit much work early wide so had to wilt and the rest had little or no excuses otherwise with perhaps the maiden Shirley Maude, as she was ridden upside down. Her only placing came when ridden cold but today she was attacking for the lead wide and took the front across the top before stopping like a pricked balloon. This was barely Listed level and is only South Island relevant but also showed the filly dominance that is prevalent as they have so many more opportunities and benefits in both extra stakes and weight relief.
