"Never been better": Why Ka Ying Rising is only now hitting career-best form
By Connor Scanlon
Ka Ying Rising is back again today, ready to prove himself once again as the world’s best sprinter.
Since winning the $20 million Everest (1200m) in October, the David Hayes-trained gelding has returned to Hong Kong and won the Group 2 BOCHK Private Banking Jockey Club Sprint (1200m) three weeks ago.
Now, the five-year-old is racing in The Longines Hong Kong Sprint (1200m) and is in career-best form, according to regular jockey Zac Purton who joined SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.
Hall: “I've been watching him on social media and hearing your conversations with other people regarding Ka Ying Rising.
“It sounds a little scary. It sounds like he's never been better.”
Purton: “Yeah, exactly as you say, it's amazing.
“We thought going down to Australia with the travel and coming back, we weren't sure how he was going to handle it.
“But he's come off the plane and he's so happy to be home. His coat's glowing, he's put on weight, he's the heaviest he's ever been.
“He's working incredible, his last win (in The BOCHK Private Banking Jockey Club Sprint) was the best performance, I think, of his career.
“It just feels like he's continuing to improve, which, as you said, is scary.”
With Ka Ying Rising’s “scary” form bolstering into The Longines Hong Kong Sprint, Purton will only be happy with the gelding’s performance if he wins.
“As long as he wins the race, I'll be happy,” Purton said.
“I think the track will be riding a little bit slower this weekend than what it was a couple of weeks ago - there's more of the winter grass that's grown through, the grass is a bit thicker, they generally have the track a little bit softer.
“So, he's probably not going to run the time that he ran last time, and the race last time was set up for a good time - Beauty Waves really run along, he (Ka Ying Rising) had a beautiful trail in behind him, was able to relax, peel out, and went bang.
“This race might be run a little bit differently, but I want a high-pressure race if I can get it.”
When the superstar jockey was asked if he is more relaxed heading into the sprint today compared to The Everest, knowing that the five-year-old is back home and never been better, Purton admitted that he is definitely more relaxed.
“For sure,” the jockey exclaimed.
“Leading into The Everest, there were those question marks - how he was gonna turn up on track? How he was he gonna handle the crowd? All those things that are unfamiliar to him here in Hong Kong.
“But now that we've got him back home, he just looks like he's at home.
“I'm very relaxed.
“When you're riding a horse like him, it's pretty easy to have a lot of confidence in him.”
Ka Ying Rising is currently the $1.08 favourite with many bookmakers to win The Longines Hong Kong Sprint today.
