Horror fall: Melbourne Cup-winning jockey faces stint on the sidelines
By SENTrack & RSN
The 2024 Melbourne Cup winner aboard Knight’s Choice, Robbie Dolan, has confirmed that his hand has been broken after a nasty fall.
On Saturday, Dolan was riding Sirkel in Race 4 at the Sunshine Coast, however the Jack Bruce-trained mare experienced "clipped heels” and “blundered rounding the home turn”, which dislodged Dolan, according to the stewards’ report.
The hoop hit the deck hard and was rushed to the Sunshine Coast Hospital.
Unfortunately, Sirkel was humanely euthanised on the track.
"I'm feeling pretty sore," Dolan told Racenet.
"I'm very lucky I only have a broken hand and a (suspected) torn muscle in my back. I'll cop that.
"It'll probably be at least a couple of weeks before I'm back riding again."
Speaking on Sirkel being euthanised, the 2024 Melbourne Cup winning jockey admitted that he was furious the horse had to be put down.
"When I saw they had the screen up for the horse I was pretty angry and threw my helmet on the ground," he said.
"I'm just devastated for the horse and her connections."
Dolan aims to return to his jockey duties in the next few weeks.
