Full AFL Origin squads and jumper numbers
By Andrew Slevison
The AFL’s State of Origin game is changing by the day as the February 14 date looms.
Geelong star Jeremy Cameron is in doubt to play for Victoria due to the broken arm he suffered in the Grand Final loss to Brisbane in September.
Dean Cox's Western Australia have made some changes with GWS midfielder Stephen Coniglio, Western Bulldogs ruckman Tim English, Fremantle’s Jaeger O’Meara and Richmond defender Nathan Broad added to the squad for next Saturday’s clash.
Chris Scott's Vics have added North Melbourne ruckman Tristan Xerri, veteran Hawthorn forward Jack Gunston, Geelong star Bailey Smith and Gold Coast defender Sam Collins.
Xerri's addition means all 18 AFL clubs will be represented.
The initial squads are starting to look and feel a little bit different less than two weeks out from the Optus Stadium fixture.
Regardless of the significant changes, Gold Coast captain Noah Anderson can’t wait to pull on the iconic navy blue ‘Big V’ jumper.
He says he’s all for the concept and not worried about the extra workload or the risk of injury.
“I’m pretty excited to get over there and get a training session in with a pretty good group of players,” Anderson said on SEN Breakfast.
“100 per cent (supportive). This time of year we’re playing practice matches anyway and we’re doing match sim in training. It’s all the same really.
“To have that opportunity you can’t say no to it. It’s exciting and I think it’s going to be great for the game.”
Victoria’s midfield unit is shaping up to consist of Anderson, his suns teammate and Brownlow Medallist Matt Rowell, as well as Vic skipper Marcus Bontempelli, Nick Daicos, Zak Butters, Zach Merrett, Hugh McCluggage, Max Holmes and Caleb Serong.
The WA on-ball group is led by captain Patrick Cripps alongside Chad Warner, and presumably Kozzie Pickett, Shai Bolton, Liam Baker, Trent Rivers, Coniglio and O’Meara.
The Vic squad will travel to Perth next Wednesday night before training on Thursday and a captain’s run on Friday prior to the Saturday game.
