Will Observer become Australia’s best middle-distance horse by the end of 2026?
By Connor Scanlon
Godolphin’s Observer stole the show at Caulfield on Saturday, winning the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) by 1.25 lengths.
In fact, the Ciaron Maher-trained three-year-old was first-up and coming off a Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) victory, putting away any doubts which pundits had on the colt.
The stellar victory amazed SENTrack racing analyst Miles Pfitzner, causing him to exclaim that Observer will win the Group 1 Australian Cup off the back of that first-up run.
“He's done that at 1400m, when he gets to 1600m, he’ll win the Australian Cup (2000m), bang, call it right now,” Pfitzner said on SENTrack’s Saturday Trackside.
“He is a serious racehorse, even I didn't think he'd do that.
“Have a look at Jack Turnbull (from Ciaron Maher Racing), he just would have said, ‘Where do we go and what do we win?’
“To do that, far out… He's just a sexy, sexy racehorse.
“He's come out there in a 1400m – a quality 1400m race – and he's won off the back of winning a Group 1 Derby over 2500m.
“That's a sign of a really, really good racehorse, when they can do that.”
Pfitzner even went as far as saying that the Godolphin colt could become Australia’s best middle-distance horse by the end of 2026.
“That horse could make a case to be the best middle-distance horse we have in the country by the end of the year,” Pfitzner exclaimed.
“Like a big case. He's a freak.”
Fellow racing analyst Sam Hyland couldn’t fully agree though.
While the former hoop believed it was an excellent race from the son of Ghaiyyath, Hyland stated that he “wouldn’t be going crazy” just yet.
“Look, it was a fantastic effort, but I still think he's going to come up against better (competition),” Hyland said.
“He made those look ordinary because he goes good, but it's going to get tougher for him.
“So, I wouldn't be going crazy yet.
“I didn't think he'd be able to go that speed, up on speed and keep kicking, but then I thought, ‘Well, were they much good?’
Pfitzner: “Probably for me, it was more what he's shown first-up (at) 1400m for a prep.”
Observer is currently $7 with Sportsbet to win the Australian Cup on March 28.
