Can Giga Kick win the Lightning Stakes?
By Connor Scanlon
Fan favourite Giga Kick resumes at Flemington on Saturday in the Group 1 Black Caviar Lightning Stakes across 1000m.
The Clayton Douglas-trained six-year-old is the second favourite in the market at $4.50 (with Sportsbet) behind Godolphin’s Tentyris.
The chestnut’s last start was a victory in the Group 1 Champions Sprint (1200m) last spring – a race where Tentyris was scratched at the gates.
Douglas has provided an update on the gelding ahead of his return for the autumn, and the trainer is super pleased with how Giga Kick is travelling!
“Giga seems like he's in really good order… very happy at the moment,” Douglas told SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.
“Two runs last preparation, both wins. He's been kept up to the mark pretty well, and trialled really sharp the other day at Caulfield.
“1000m up the straight (at Flemington), looks like a nice kick-off point for him.
“I think (his build-up into the autumn) has been relatively smooth going. I've been able to get the work into him.
“He had a pretty light spring, so he didn't have very long to set me up well for this autumn campaign.
“And he's a horse who generally improves with a run under the belt, but he's pretty forward come Saturday, and I think it's a nice kick-off point.
Giga Kick has raced across 1000m four times in his career but has only won once, which came in his two-year-old season.
When asked if the son of Scissor Kick can win a 1000m Group 1, the trainer believes the race will shape up well for the gelding to win the million-dollar sprint.
“I'm definitely hoping so… I think there's still enough speed in that race that they should get along a little bit,” Douglas said.
“He's sort of trialled sharp and fresh first-up, so he'll be running very well, that's for sure.
“I'm happy with where we're drawn too (6)! It looks like there's a little bit of speed out wide us and then a few up underneath as well.
“He probably won't be too far away from the speed early and you could see him sort of camping on that speed and hopefully he's off strong late.”
Regarding the plan for the remainder of the six-year-old’s autumn, Douglas revealed they will travel to Sydney together after the Lightning Stakes.
“We'll head up to Sydney… Likely he heads up for another 1000m run in the Challenge Stakes,” the trainer stated.
“That will sort of have him ready third-up for a TJ Smith (1200m).
“He will (go to the All Aged Stakes after the TJ Smith). That'll be his fourth run - he's been able to win that race before, and he's quite active at the 1400m, so it looks like a nice option for him as well.”
“It's a nice autumn programme for him.”
Tentyris is the favourite on Saturday for the Lightning Stakes at $2.50.
