Not giving up: Stephenson’s plea after missing Power list spot
By SEN
Jaidyn Stephenson admits he is disappointed after missing out at Port Adelaide.
The former Collingwood and North Melbourne forward was not offered a spot on the Power’s list after training over the pre-season as an SSP hopeful.
Stephenson, the 2018 Rising Star, was rated a “a lock” to get a list spot by Channel 7’s Josh Money last month but ultimately missed out.
The 122-gamer was disappointed but grateful for the chance.
“Extremely disappointed,” Stephenson told 9News.
“I’ve worked hard over the last four months, uprooted my life, moved from Melbourne, had a good job and was playing footy here.
“But the opportunity was there, and I’m certainly grateful that Port Adelaide gave me that opportunity.”
The 27-year-old met with Josh Carr over the weekend and was told the news.
After accepting what the Port coach had to say, Stephenson made a plea to any other AFL club who still has a list vacancy.
“We met up and he said, ‘Mate, unfortunately we’re not going to go with you, but thanks for coming over and we appreciate your time’,” he added.
“I had an opportunity to chase my dream again, and I haven’t given up on that either.
“There’s footage of our internal game, I’m sure there’s footage of that Crows game (SANFL practice match).
“So for anyone else that has an SSP spot out there, I encourage you to look at that because I’m hungry and I want to be playing AFL football again.”
Port Adelaide have made two signings with their SSP spots, awarding deals to Norwood intercept defender Balyn O’Brien, and East Fremantle small forward Mitch Zadow.
Despite having one open list spot remaining, the club has told both Stephenson and ex-Cat Ted Closehy that they won't be offered a deal at the club.
