Melham vindicated for Streisand choice with Group 1 win
By Nicholas Quinlan
The SEN Track team has reacted to Streisand’s win in the Blue Diamond Stakes out at Caulfield.
After a false start from I Am Aria, which delayed the race by a couple of minutes, the two-year-old Bay Filly ridden by Ben Melham got the job done in a time of 1:10.10 for the 1200 metre Group 1.
It’s now trainer Clinton McDonald’s second win at this race in three years after having done so with Hayasugi. The horse is also part-owned by former West Coast/St Kilda ruckman Michael Gardiner.
Reacting to the result as soon as the race concluded, David Taggart was impressed by how well jockey Ben Melham rode the horse, considering he chose it over then favourite Big Sky when it was the favourite to win, with it later being scratched the day before the race.
David Taggart: “Clinton McDonald (has) just got his second Diamond in three years with another filly.”
“It was Hayasugi back in 2024 (and) he’s won it again in '26.”
“He was three deep, up on pressure, not much made ground. We thought Unit Five was going to storm over the top."
“But (Ben) Melham, he was confident. He had a bow peep back to his, he looked over his left shoulder, rounding the turn and thought ‘I’ve got these (horses)’.”
Campbell Brown: “Remember, Benny Melham had the choice about three or four weeks ago on two really good horses."
“He went with Streisand (over Big Sky).”
The Group 1 winning jockey, alongside Miles Pfitzner, also noted the performance of third-place Guest House, which was ridden by Ben’s partner Jamie.
Taggart: “Guest House had nowhere to go.”
__ Pfitzner:__ “There’s always a sick one in the Diamond. It over raced early, then got clear air and gets cut off again by Closer to Free (placed 2nd).”
Taggart: “Frustration. Not much Jamie (Melham) could do, a hell of a lot.
“That's what happens when you've got big fields, and you draw an inside gate. Guest House, another 3 or 4 strides, he probably gets close to winning."
__ Pfitzner:__ “I'll tell you what, Eternal Warrior (placed 6th), late was enormous as well.
“But Guest House (is) probably the hard luck story in the Diamond.
“Streisand gets it done and got it done in fine style, and McDonald, well, he just continues to (go from) strength to strength.”
