Tasracing's Sunday best bets at Hobart (10/05)

The Tasmanian Racing Club in Hobart host an eight-race card on Sunday afternoon.

Fine weather is forecast for race day, with the rail in the +10m position, a shift from +7m for the meeting a fortnight ago.

Race 4 – 11. The Tazwegian

The Tazwegian is working up to a win, putting in two particularly good runs at her last two visits to Hobart. She went back to last over a mile last time, set an impossible winning task, but savaged the line to finish on the heels of the placegetters. That was an ideal tune-up for the rise to 2040m, which appears to be a target race given the attached Tasbred bonus. I’m keen on her, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see each-way odds.

Race 8 – 5. Just A Needs

It’s approaching 12 months since the last win for Just A Needs, but she’s been tried as a stayer, and I’m not convinced that’s her go. Off a two-month freshen-up, she resumed with an eye-catching fourth, doing her best work at the end of the race. She now gets out to a mile, where she’s only missed the top three once in seven tries in Hobart, which includes two wins. I expect the market to gravitate to Georgaroni, and potentially Hurricane Ketut, which will give us value on Just A Needs across both totes.

Race 1 – 7. Miss Strat

It’s hard to predict what the market will do with the opening race, but I’ll be happy to have something on the debutant, Miss Strat. The 3yo filly had her first trial back in July 2025, so it’s taken her a long time to get to race day. I like the way she chased Wheeling at Longford, a horse that’s won five races, and her work at Devonport last winter also suggested she has ability. She’s close to a month since her trial, so market support might be key, but off her trials I think she’s a horse that will win races.
