Maher: Jimmysstar's going “as good as ever” ahead of Group 1
By Connor Scanlon
Jimmysstar has failed to win in each of his four starts this preparation, but trainer Ciaron Maher is confident that the gelding’s luck with turn on Saturday.
Currently the $5 favourite with Sportsbet to win the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm, Maher is adamant that the track will suit the son of Per Incanto perfectly.
In fact, the trainer stated that the six-year-old has only had one bad run this prep, explaining that Jimmysstar’s stats were still very good in the rest of his runs, and especially in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m).
“Eagle Farm and the 1300m is much more to his liking (as it is a) bigger track,” Maher told SENTrack & RSN’s Giddy Up.
“He’s probably only had the one bad run. But every other run's stats and figures have been very good. His run in the All Aged was very good.
“When you sometimes get back a little bit (like he does), then you need things to go your way.
“I think he's going as good as ever.”
Recently in the week, one of Jimmysstar’s owners, Ozzie Kheir, told Giddy Up that the chestnut is a chance to run in the $3 million Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm on June 13, if the gelding wins on Saturday.
While Jimmysstar has been handed the top-weight with 58.5kg, Maher agreed with Kheir’s sentiment, explaining how retired mare Bella Nipotina ran second in the Stradbroke with a similar weight, using that as the reason why the son of Per Incanto could run in that 1400m Group 1.
“Yeah, exactly like (Ozzie Kheir) said,” Maher agreed.
“Especially at Eagle Farm - a nice, big track is going to suit him.
“Bella Nipotina had similar weight with the mare allowance and was very good, running second in it.
“It's not beyond him, I thought with that weight.”
Jimmysstar is currently the $7.50 favourite to win the Stradbroke Handicap.
