AFL secures ultra-motion cameras to protect September football
By Sam Edmund
The AFL has again moved to protect the finals from score review controversy, ordering another set of super cameras for September.
The advanced technology will capture vision at four times more clarity than the cameras currently being used in the home-and-away season.
The league has forked out for the cameras for September the last couple of years, with the benefits laid bare in last season’s Gold Coast elimination final win over Fremantle when David Swallow’s set shot was touched.
The ultra-motion cameras will operate at a far higher frames-per-second rate, enabling ARC operators to make decisions with greater certainty.
Sources said using the cameras all season was simply cost prohibitive, but with the long lead-in time to get them here and installed, the AFL recently put another order in for finals.
AFL football boss Greg Swann earlier this year travelled to San Francisco for key meetings with NFL chiefs and discussions around advancements in officiating.
The NFL employ different levels of technology depending on the calibre of game and its location. Essentially, the bigger the game, the better the technology.
The AFL is reluctant to employ a similar strategy during its home-and-away season, but feel the heightened consequence of finals is reason to invest.
