Glenn Stevenson on track for career-best season in Tassie
By Matt Reid
In his 17th season, leading trainer Glenn Stevenson is working on his best season to date.
Stevenson recorded 56 wins during the 23/24 campaign and sits on 45 in 25/26 with nine meetings remaining for the season.
“It’s been a good year, and there are a few to come that we’re hopeful can get some results in the next couple of months,” said Stevenson, who sits second behind only John Blacker (59) on the Premiership table.
Asva, winner of this year’s Ladbrokes Devonport and Launceston Cups, is the primary reason Stevenson has already matched last season’s prize money total with two months to go. The horse’s Launceston Cup victory secured him a place in October’s Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m), a target Stevenson is working towards.
“He’s been over in Victoria spelling since March, and he’s about to go to Ballarat.
“It’s a challenge trying to engineer a program to get him to the Geelong Cup, so he might have to campaign in Victoria in readiness for that. It’s one of the reasons he’s over there, to get him acclimatised to the travel.”
Stevenson is also preparing himself for the loss of his main stable rider, Codi Jordan, who is heading off on a long-term holiday at the end of June. 26 of Stevenson’s 45 wins for the season have come with Jordan in the saddle.
“Generally, the people who ride trackwork will get a chance on race day, and we’ll just do what we can.
“It’ll be a great opportunity for Kirra (Lee Lane) to pick up some more rides, but it’s definitely something the team will have to work through.”
Stevenson had a winning double on his home track in Devonport on 17 May and will head there a fortnight later with strong hopes of at least repeating the dose.
Blameitontheboogie was very impressive winning in class 4 company first-up and will meet similar opposition in the same grade over 1150m.
“He gives weight to the field, but he’s come through last start well, and I expect him to run well again.”
The trainer will also unveil a pair of newcomers to his stable, in the form of Laugh With Me (race 4) and Wild Dancer (race 6).
“Both horses have settled in nicely. The draws are a little sticky, particularly with Laugh With Me (15), but they should be thereabouts.”
In total, Stevenson has seven of his team engaged across six of the eight races.
“They’ve all been tested on the synthetic, and we know where we’re at, so if things go to plan, it should be a good day.”
