Tasracing's Sunday best bets at Devonport (31/05)
By Matt Reid
Sunday thoroughbred racing is on the synthetic in Devonport with eight races scheduled.
Following concerns about diminishing light towards the end of recent meetings, the program will start at 11:33 and the last race at 15:55.
Best Bet
Race 1 – 2. Cold Aza Beer
Just a moderate maiden kicks off the day, and I’m keen on the chances of Cold Aza Beer to start us on the right note. He’s on the quick back-up from last Sunday, where he had to absorb some pressure in the lead but boxed on well to be beaten less than three lengths. Blinkers go on, and I expect him to deploy the same tactics, but with a softer lead, they hopefully won’t catch him. I think that race is clearly the key formline, with Called Through the main danger.
Next best
Race 5 – 2. Tikken
Tikken enjoyed the run of the race to win his first start in the state, but from a poor draw last time covered plenty of ground when finishing fifth. I think there was still merit in that run, and the jump to 1350m, along with a soft barrier, both appear to be big positives. The 5yo looks a good addition to the stables of Trent Wells, who prepares most of his winners at his home track in Devonport.
Best each-way
Race 4 – 9. Laugh With Me
Glenn Stevenson has a brilliant record with tried horses, and I’m inclined to keep one of his newcomers here very safe. Laugh With Me comes from his good mate, Matthew Brown, and has a couple of synthetic wins to her credit. Her most recent Victorian form is only fair, but this looks like a nice kick-off point, and I’d be surprised if Laugh With Me isn’t in the finish with any luck from a wide barrier.
