Kemp's biggest concern for South Sydney after dominant win
By SEN
Following their dominant victory against Brisbane, Denan Kemp has expressed concern with one aspect of South Sydney's line-up.
With the Rabbitohs trading their traditional cardinal and myrtle kit for a white-out jersey in honour of teammate Jai Arrow, the Bunnies smashed the Broncos in a clinical 48-6 victory on Thursday night.
As a result, Souths currently sit in sixth place and are well and truly in the mix for a spot in the top eight despite losing their last three matches.
But Kemp was worried about the side’s spine and its ability to compete with the top echelon of the competition.
“My biggest question is their spine,” Kemp said on SEN’s Morning Glory with Matty Johns.
“You look at it, obviously Jye Gray, I thought it was phenomenal last night.
“You've got (Ashton) Ward, and then you've also got Cheese (Brandon Smith) , (Peter) Mamouzelos, maybe (Bronson) Garlick.
“My concern is we're at Round 15, and we're not unsure, like you kind of have an idea of what their spine is.
“But when I compare that spine to the top dogs, like you've got the Dolphins, you've got Penrith.
“I mean, you could argue the Warriors' spine isn't as strong as some of the other teams, so it's evidence that you can be in the top four without the strongest spine.
“But is there a concern (with) that spine, when it gets to finals footy can go to another level?”
But while their spine is not as star-studded, Jack Johns believes it could benefit them, as it gives them more options to use, making them more versatile.
“I think that it's actually perfect for them,” Johns explained.
“Obviously, Cheese, he was out for ages at the start of the year, so obviously that threw a spanner in the works.
“But then it's given the other two a little bit of NRL time, which is gonna be good for the back end of the year.
“Because I don't think there aren't too many clubs getting around with 80-minute hookers.
“You're gonna need more than one, and I think Souths will be that side.
“Seeing Cheese last night and him just going after the game, like he was doing things out of hooker.
“At one point, he got dragged over the sideline from hooker. He just had that much energy, and he'll only do better for the game time he'll have.
“And then having guys like Pete and Bronson there as that rest guy that'll come on and do their job really well for 20 to 25 minutes.
“I think they're in good stead to really start building this spine for the back end of the year.”
South Sydney takes the bye into Round 16, with their next clash coming against the Eels on June 25.
The match takes place at CommBank Stadium with kick-off at 7:50pm AEST.
SEN League will have live coverage of the match from 6pm with NRL Countdown.
