Parker: The five reasons why everyone hates the Broncos
By SEN
It’s the team you either love or hate.
Since they entered the NSWRL in 1988, the Brisbane Broncos have been a source of pride amongst their raucous fanbase and largely a source of hatred for those they play against.
That hatred would be on display on Monday with Cowboys coach Todd Payten declaring that ‘everyone hates the Broncos’ ahead of the Queensland Derby on Saturday.
Following Payten’s statement, the second most capped Bronco in the club’s history, Corey Parker, has come up with five reasons behind the hatred for Queensland’s most successful NRL side.
See his list below.

1. Tall poppy syndrome
“I mean, part of the reason is that the old-fashioned tall poppy syndrome that comes so often with Australian culture, which I dislike,” he explained on SENQ Breakfast.
“But we've all been part of it at some point of trying to pull someone down when we think they should be rising.
“The Broncos, they've got seven premierships since entering the competition (in 1988).
“There's a couple of lean years, don't worry about that 19, in fact between their last.
“But they did play in three grand finals (during that drought), just unable to get the job done.
2. Media attention
“They’re owned by News Limited. 52% of that (is) owned by News Limited, so they do dominate all the press.
“So if you're a (Queensland) Red or a (Brisbane) Lion or whoever it might be, you pick up the paper (and) invariably, first story on the back page is a Brisbane Bronco.
“So that generates an opinion, so maybe there's some form of dislike with that regard.

3. The supporters
“Their fan base is around about 70,000 to 80,000, which is considerably larger than most in the NRL.
“So, a lot of people just try and tear down the Brisbane Broncos.
“Their supporters arguably, and this is arguably, some of the most passionate in the NRL.
“If you're a Briwi (Kiwi in Brisbane) or a Wah fan in Brisbane, you probably throw a little bit of dislike to that.
4. The Queensland connection
"This one is for the Blues fans. The Broncos have been littered with Maroon superstars.
"Lockyer, Langer, Webcke, Walsh just to name a few.
"In the 90’s the Broncos squad was effectively a Queensland State team.
"If you hate the Maroons, then you probably hate the Broncos too.
5. Destination Club
“But at the end of the day, I suppose, the players who come to Brisbane, they have this attraction that people wanna come and play for the Brisbane Broncos, which then brings a fair bit of opinion (and) a fair bit of dislike."

The Broncos will travel up to Townsville to take on North Queensland, with the match taking place on Saturday night.
Kick-off is at 7:35pm AEST with SEN's live coverage of the match beginning from 7pm AEST with Broncos Radio on SENQ, SENTrack Brisbane, SENTrack Atherton, Ingham, Rockhampton and Darling Downs and on the SEN app.
